The Concept

Duuma Wajane Bike Shop, employs four women who have gone through extensive training to become bike mechanics and operate a their own business enterprise. Typically, this type of job would be given to a male. Through this female-driven model, Sanctury Retreats empowers women to experience a new field of skills,  earn their own income, and help break the social construct of gender.

The Employees

What makes Duuma Wajane particularly unique is that all the women employed at the shop are local widows. In rural parts of Tanzania, after the husband passes, all assets (farms, cattle, houses etc.) are given to the husband’s family. This means that following the tragedy of the husband’s death, the widow is very often left with nothing.
