Today you will arrive in Beijing Capital International Airport, where you will be met by a Sanctuary Retreats representative who will assist with your transfer to your hotel.

In the early morning you will travel outside the city to the northeast and on to the Mutianyu Section of the Great Wall.

The Wall has been built up in myth and legend, however, despite the many inaccuracies written about it, it remains one of the great wonders of the world. The wall rides the highest point of the mountaintops and provides some stunning views of the countryside. There are two ways up the wall: a new cable car or the traditional route, 1,156 steps!

The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Day 3


This morning you will visit Tiananmen Square, the largest public plaza on earth. The square can hold approximately 500,000 people. The square, in spite of its past implications, remains one of the most popular venues in Beijing. You will then visit the Forbidden City, which was once the imperial residence of the emperors and their familes. Walk through the Forbidden City visiting many of the halls and galleries, which make up the palace. 

You will then be transferred to Beijing Airport for your flight to Yichang Airport where you will be transferred to the pier to embark on your Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer cruise.

Day 4


 Start your morning with traditional Chinese exercise and work up an appetite for the international buffet breakfast. After breakfast view the Xiling Gorge, then visit the Three Gorges Project Dam Site and Exhibition Centre. Enjoy an international lunch buffet back on the ship, followed by an orientation to China presentation. Complimentary afternoon tea will be served before a silk embroidery presentation. Tonight there will be a Captain's reception and a la carte dinner.

This morning cruise the Shennong Stream and disembark at Badong to transfer to a local longboat (sampan) poled by Tujia boatmen before an international lunch buffet on board. This afternoon view Wu Gorge and then enjoy an arts & crafts presentation before an a la carte diner. After dinner enjoy the crew variety show.

Start your morning with traditional Chinese exercise and work up an appetite for the buffet breakfast. After breakfast you will have a chance to visit Fengdu, a charming river village noted for bustling markets.  You can explore the relocation village, the local kindergarten or the local market. Following a lunch buffet, there will be an art & craft presentation and you will then have a chance to learn how to make Chinese dumplings. In the evening, enjoy "A Taste of China" dinner where you will be greeted by our dancing lions.

Enjoy an international buffet breakfast before disembarking at 9am, where you will visit the Stilwell Museum that is dedicated to General Joseph Stilwell for the time he served as commander-in-Chief of the American forces. The Museum is located in the actual house occupied by General Stilwell during the war. Next, transfer to Chongqing Airport for your flight to Shanghai, where upon arrival you will be greeted and taken to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Begin the morning with a visit toYu Garden, a 16th century Ming period private garden / residence built by a high official to honor his mother. From here, you will proceed to the Old Town of Shanghai.  This Chinese city is the oldest inhabited part of Shanghai where the streets are narrow and crowded with street hawkers and shops. Continue onto visit the Bund, which parallels the course of the Huangpu River.

You will then be transferred to airport for you onward flight to Myanmar.

Take an early morning flight to Mandalay, where you will be met on arrival and transferred to Shwe Kyet Yet jetty to embark on your Sanctuary Ananda cruise.

Afternoon excursion by coach to Amarapura with its textile workshops and Sagaing, the centre of the Buddhist faith in Myanmar which is renowned for its monasteries, pagodas and nunneries as well as its silversmiths. A boat will take by the U Bein Bridge to enjoy the sunset with drinks. Return to the ship for cocktails and dinner, after which enjoy a traditional musical performance in the Kansi panorama lounge.

Enjoy early morning meditation or yoga on deck before breakfast, after which travel by horsecart to Ava which for five centuries was the ancient imperial capital and visit the monasteries and pagodas of Bagaya.  Return to the ship to sail along the Ayeryarwady southwards to Bagan.  Spend the afternoon enjoying the shifting scenery along the riverbank from sun deck by the pool or from the Kansi panorama lounge, or simply relax on your private balcony.  Also on offer is a selection of demonstrations and lectures to help you learn more about this magical country.  Anchor for the night.

Early morning yoga and meditation on deck, otherwise breakfast at leisure before taking a trishaw to Pakokku to visit the local market, the traditional shoe and cheroot factories.

Return to the ship for lunch, after which take a coach tour of Bagan to see some of the most important temples and pagodas among the 2000 which comprise this most magnificent archaeological site - the Ananda, the Htilominlo and the Pyathatgyi. Wonder at the sunset from the Pyathatgyi temple before returning to the ship for dinner and a traditional Burmese musical performance.

Choose one of two early morning optional excursions - a balloon ride over Bagan (at an additional charge) or sunrise meditation at one of the temples. After breakfast sail southwards to Sale where a trishaw awaits to  take you to visit Yoke Sone Monastery and the wooden monastery of Thartana Yaunggyi  before returning to the ship for lunch.  In the afternoon cruise back to Bagan and visit the sacred Buddhist Shwezigon Pagoda which houses a bone and tooth of the Gautama Buddha and the Gubyaukgyi Temple. Return to the ship by horsecart and enjoy your farewell dinner.

Day 13

Inle lake

Early morning breakfast and disembark the Sanctuary Ananda. You will be transferred to Bagan Airport for your flight onto Sittwe via Yangon. Upon your arrival in Heho, you will be met and transferred by road and then boat to your luxurious hotel in the quiet countryside of Myanmar. Inle Lake is a beautiful, peaceful area of Myanmar where you will have many glimpes into the unique local methods of farming, fishing and local crafts.Enjoy an Inthar lunch, mostly traditional recipes with fresh vegetable from the organic gardens grown on the lake. Travel by boat across the lake to visit the Phaung Dao Oo Pagoda, which enshrines five Buddha images which have been covered in so much gold leaf that their features are no longer defined.

Day 14

Inle Lake

After breakfast visit the five day market which is named such due to how it changes location every five days to better suit the needs of the local hill tribes who come to buy and sell their goods. Continue from here across the lake passed floating farms to the Inn Paw Khone Village where the traditional weaving techniques are used. Travel onto Nam Pan Village which is built on stillts above the water to see a local blacksmith in action, a boat builder's workshop and a cheroot making factory where you can even have a go at rolling your own cheroot.

Enjoy an exotic lunch on the lake before visiting In Dein, where you will have an opportunity to wander through this typical lakeside village, all the while observing the lives of local people before reaching Shwe In Dein, an impressive and thankfully unrestored collection of ancient Shan style stupas. Then return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 15


After breakfast you will be transfered to Heho airport for your flight to Yangon.

In the evening you will visit the Shewadagon Pagoda, the largest and oldest pagoda in Myanmar. You will not fail to be impressive by the gilded stupa in the centre with a large emerald on the top and the decorative statues surrounding it. Accoridng to legend, eight hairs of the last Buddha are ensrhined within.

After breakfast visit the Reclining Buddha Pagoda, which is a pavilion housing a 230 foot statue. About 600 monks live in the monastery and spend their days studying and meditating. In the afternoon you will be transferred to Yangon International Airport for your onward flight.
