Planet Earth II - Okavango Delta
As safari experts and nature enthusiasts, we love a good nature documentary. We love them even more when our properties locations are featured in them…
Botswana will be brought alive in living rooms across the UK on 4th December in episode 5 of Sir David Attenborough's Planet Earth II, with the show airing in various countries throughout 2017. Focusing on grasslands, the episode features the remote Chief's Island - where prides of lions have learned to swim in their bid for survival.
It’s no surprise that the location was chosen for the show. Botswana offers some of the finest game viewing in the world due to the incredible concentration and diversity of mammals and wildlife. It is well-known for its large herds of elephants, who featured in the original Planet Earth series from 2006. This series will see the show focus on a different side of the Okavango Delta, one that will no doubt stir a frenzy of interest in the region.
Focusing on Chief’s Island, located in the Okavango Delta’s Moremi Game Reserve, the show’s content is very fitting for the area’s reputation as the ‘predator capital of Africa’. Wildlife and wilderness is found here in abundance, with the grasslands and waterways creating a haven for wild dog, leopard, elephant, rhino, and - of course - the swimming lions.
Thanks to the country’s focus on protecting its wilderness and huge variety of flora and fauna, Botswana is also is renowned as an exclusive and authentic safari destination. As well as more traditional jeep and walking safaris, the country’s geography also allows for exploring the Delta from a mokoro (a traditional dug out canoe) – giving the opportunity for extraordinary wildlife encounters.
Chief's Island is also home to our luxurious Sanctuary Chief's Camp.
Recently re-opened after a complete re-build, the camp offers a new, luxurious contemporary safari in one of the best locations in Africa. It now offers 10 stylish pavilions and a superb suite - The Geoffrey Kent Luxury Suite - and is setting new standards in the luxury safari experience. The spacious new pavilions have incredible views over the surrounding Okavango Delta, which can be enjoyed from each pavilion’s private pool or from the tranquil outdoor seating area. Bathrooms – complete with floor to ceiling windows - also have a spacious outdoor shower and an indulgent, large bath tub – perfect for soaking in after a day’s game viewing.
As only one of two properties on Chief’s Island, Sanctuary Chief’s Camp offers guests the chance to explore some of the most pristine wilderness in the world – and spot Botswana’s soon-to-be-famous aquatic lions.
