Plants and People Africa, Botswana

Plants of the Okavango Delta

Plants and People Africa is a botanical research and community outreach project which is supported by Sanctuary Chief's Camp in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.

Over the past four years, Sanctuary Chief's Camp has supported the work of Alison and Roger Heath, acclaimed British botanists and authors, with the research for their book ‘The Plants of Northern Botswana including the Okavango Delta’. In the book they give a detailed guide of local flowers and plant life in Botswana.

While researching, Alison and Roger were accommodated at Sanctuary Chief’s Camp which enabled them to carry out their work in the area. During their research, Roger and Alison discovered new species of plants which were sent to the National Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew in the United Kingdom who authenticated the new species and supported the publication of the book. Through their research project, they have given Sanctuary Retreats’ clients the exclusive opportunity to see the processes involved in the analysis of the huge variety of plant life in Botswana’s Okavango Delta.

To advance their work, Alison and Roger would like to raise funds to expand their study and involve local university postgraduates in their research. They wish to purchase research equipment including a microscope and presses to aid the examination and photography of the many plant specimens in northern Botswana.
