Nakatindi Community School, Zambia

Nakatindi Village

At the northern edge of Nakatindi Village lies Nakatindi Community School, which is one of Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma's Philanthropic projects. Around two-thirds of the 442 children are dependent on the school for the one meal a day that it provides. The children are so dependent on the school and it has been such a success due to the commitment of the local community in giving support as volunteers, including the five qualified teachers who work on a voluntary basis.

The school only receives support from the Zambian government in the form of school books and through seven school teachers. The community school has only eight classes from pre-school through to grade 7. There are nearly 500 students and only four classrooms to accommodate them for their classes. Because of this, the school day is divided into a morning session for half the school and an afternoon session for the remainder.

The next steps include improvement of the water and sewerage systems to make sure the community has access to clean water that will reduce disease and illness. The building of two new classrooms for the community school, including an ablution block.
