By treating grey and black wastewater in a unique system, the
clean water can then be released back into the Mara River and can
also be used in the irrigation system within the camp, including
the tree nursery.
The waste water is processed through four different treatment
pools allowing varying plant life to grow - and new plants that can
thrive in each pool are being researched and introduced
regularly. Some even grow flowers that are used to decorate
the camp. The project has been in operation at Sanctuary Olonana
for twelve years and has helped the camp win the prestigious Eco
Warrior Award from Ecotourism Kenya multiple times.
