SAFARIS

One of South Africa’s premier game-viewing destinations, the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the “Big 5” (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard), the rare African wild dog (called “Makanyane” in the Tswana language) as well as cheetah, giraffe, hyena, and a host of other game species.

The birdlife is also spectacular, with over 360 bird species being found in the reserve. This beautiful and diverse African wilderness encompasses 75,000 hectares of widely varying terrain. From rocky peaks, across open grasslands, to verdant valleys, each area, with its own distinctive inhabitants, provides visitors with an unforgettable safari experience. Ideally situated in South Africa’s North West Province, access to the reserve is simple and direct, a mere 3.5 hour drive or 45 minute flight from Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Wildlife at Sanctuary Makanyane

Lion2 Cropped

Lion, elephant, black and white rhino, buffalo and leopard are all here in abundance, as well as cheetah, giraffe and both spotted and brown hyena and you have the chance of seeing any of these species. One of the most significant aspects of Madikwe is the extremely varied terrain, providing a backdrop to the rich diversity.

Wild Dog 3

Madikwe is also the one of the best places in Southern Africa to watch the elusive and rare wild dog, a fascinating species on the brink of extinction. Energetic, entertaining, these fearsome predators range widely across the changing landscape of the reserve.

Game Drive With Elephant Cropped

There are two daily game drives at Makanyane, timed to make the most of the periods when the game is the most active, one in the early morning and another in the late afternoon. The afternoon drive continues into the night, a shielded spotlight revealing the nocturnal wildlife.

White Rhino

Travelling through Makanyane’s completely private 1,800 hectares and the 75,000 hectares of the magnificent Madikwe Game Reserve, your guide will share their wealth of knowledge with you. Game drive times may vary according to game activity and spontaneous drives may also go out.

Cheetah Cropped

For an even more in-depth exploration of the bush, a game walk is essential - a highly educational and uniquely enlightening experience.
