Makanyane Children 3 Border

Madikwe Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s premier malaria-free “Big 5” wildlife destinations. Madikwe is renowned as an ideal reserve for children and families to safely enjoy the excitement and stimulation of an authentic safari experience.

Makanyane is not fenced off from the reserve – it is the responsibility of the parents to be mindful of potential dangers as Makanyane is in a prime wildlife area. Children may not walk between the main lodge and their suite without an adult. All swimming must be supervised by the child’s parents and no children are allowed in the gym unsupervised.

The suites are large enough to comfortably accommodate two extra sleeper-beds for children.

Child policy 2016: Children aged 12 and over are welcome. A maximum of two children aged 12-17 are able to share a suite with their parents. Children 12 to 17 years pay 50% of adult rate. Children under 12 years are welcome when the lodge is booked exclusively.

Makanyane provides children and families with an unforgettable wildlife experience, designed to inspire, educate and above all entertain young minds while promoting a deep respect for the environment and natural areas and a strong desire to preserve both. Children over the age of 5 are taken on the Junior Ranger Course presented by the lodge's guides and staff - a fun-filled, exciting course where children are taught survival skills, tracking skills, orientation skills and an endless array of exciting and fun facts about the African bush and why it is so vital to conserve it. Children younger than 5, accompanied by an adult, are also welcome to join the fun!

Makanyane Children 2 (1)

junior ranger course

The junior ranger course is run for approximately two hours each morning after breakfast and the morning game drives allowing Mum and Dad a bit of time to focus on themselves, while their children are being looked after and entertained. The programme is aimed at children aged 5 to 10 years old.  The course includes:

  • Closely supervised target practice with bow and arrows (made by the children themselves) and air rifles, a very popular aspect of the course - with parents and children alike!
  • A mini game walk in the grounds of the camp, exploring the banks of the river and bush around the lodge. Special emphasis is placed on the fascinating small wildlife and insect life of the African bush
  • Social, cultural and ecological education designed to give children information on the diverse cultures in South Africa and the importance of conservation and preservation
  • Once they have completed their Makanyane Pup course, children are presented with their very own certificate, signed by their ranger

The children enjoy a child orientated menu and any specific dietary requirements will be taken into account.
