Day 01 - ARRIVE ARUSHA - FLY TO SERENGETI

Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp, Serengeti, Tanzania Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp, Serengeti, Tanzania

On arrival in Arusha a Sanctuary Retreats representative will  be there to meet you. Take a connecting scheduled flight to Seronera in the Serengeti, departing at 8am.  Flying time is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.  Upon arrival you will be met by a Sanctuary Kusini representative and transferred to Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp, a Sanctuary Retreats partner camp.  Enjoy a short  game viewing drive en route to the camp, in an open 4WD vehicle.  There is time to freshen-up and settle in before lunch.

Mbuzi Mawe is scenically located in a glade, known as 'the place of the klipspringer' (mbuzi mawe).   The camp lies in one of the annual migration corridors, for over one million wildebeest, half a million zebras and gazelles, in the heart of the Serengeti. 16 spacious en suite tents are scattered around the central mess tent  and there is a scenic safari bar and a gift shop.

This afternoon venture out into the Serengeti on an afternoon game drive in search of the big 5 or the Great Migration (May - July and October to mid-December).

Every year 1.5 million wildebeest migrate from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara followed by hundreds of thousands of zebra, gazelle and other plains game in search of fresh grazing pastures.

Return to your camp this evening for dinner before retiring to your spacious tent for the evening.

Meal Plan: Lunch and dinner.

Overnight: Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp (partner camp)

Day 02 - SERENGETI

Sanctuary Kusini Sanctuary Kusini

Awake early this morning for a hearty breakfast before leaving for your next destination, Sanctuary Kusini, in Southern Serengeti. Your drive today will take you through the centre of the Serengeti National Park where lion, elephant and buffalo are regularly seen and even the elusive leopard makes an appearance.

Enjoy a picnic lunch after an eventful morning of game viewing before continuing past rocky outcrops on vast plains as you journey further south.  The open plains spread out as far as the eye can see, so it is no surprise that the name Serengeti comes from the Maasai language meaning "endless plains."  The park itself covers 14,763 sq. kilometres, making it one of the world's largest wildlife sanctuaries and it is host to one of the world's largest land migrations.

Arrive at your camp late this afternoon with time to freshen up before climbing to the top of the camps Kopje and enjoy stunning 360 degree views of the Serengeti.  Relax with your preferred drink as you watch the setting sun paint the Serengeti with pinks, oranges and reds.

Accommodation is offered in twelve double tents which are scattered around the main Kopje. Each tent is attended by a personal butler and has en-suite facilities with hot and cold running water. Private verandah's with comfortable furnishings extend in front of each unit.  The dining area, lounge and library are housed in the main area, which affords spectacular views from its wooden deck and the adjacent kopje.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.

Overnight: Sanctuary Kusini

Day 03 - SERENGETI

Calving Season, Serengeti Tanzania Cheetah Project, Sanctuary Kusini, Serengeti, Tanzania

Sanctuary Kusini is ideally placed to catch the calving season that can be found in this area of the park from around mid December to  April, when the Zebra and Wildebeest drop their young.    You may choose to spend the morning game viewing on the plains, among the herds of  wildebeest  or alternatively enjoy a specialised cheetah watch game drive, as the area around Sanctuary Kusini is famed for it's cheetah.

Whilst at Sanctuary Kusini you have the chance to contribute to cheetah conservation through the Cheetah Watch Campaign, by submitting your sightings of cheetah in Tanzania to the Serengeti Cheetah Project. On a morning game drive learn how to identify cheetah and record their behaviour before combining this data with photos and a record of their location. This information is sent to the Cheetah Project’s researchers who use it to help them monitor cheetahs, and in return will provide you, where possible, with a background of your cheetah, including its name, age and its family history.

Following lunch at the camp you may like to spend the afternoon relaxing on your verandah with your favourite book or return to the plains for an afternoon game drive in search of buffalo and Lion.  Return to your camp this evening to freshen up before dinner.

Following dinner this evening retire to the Kopjie where you may take this rare opportunity to enjoy a cosmic safari as the camp manager unravels the myths of the night sky.

Meal Plan:  Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Overnight: Sanctuary Kusini
