Responsible Tourism in Uganda

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

December 2011

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda has taken the lead in conserving the environment which impacts the local communities surrounding the national park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. One of the main programmes that the camp has recently undertaken is the collection of plastic water bottles from the camp.

These water bottles are being used to construct a water tank for the 'Victory Primary School', which is located two kilometres from Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp. The Head Teacher has requested 4,000 bottles from the camp, which are filled with dry dust and are placed side by side as building blocks to create the water tank for clean water for school children to drink, and to help prepare breakfast and lunch served at school.  So the water bottles are being re-used as a water tank - a fantastic display of innovation.
