UNUSUAL SIGHTINGS AT SANCTUARY OLONANA, KENYA
We recently had some very unusual sightings on game drives in the Mara. In two different days our guides and the guests returned to camp vary excited after their game drives. They had been fortunate to see lions which had climbed up and were resting in the trees. We know Uganda and Lake Manyara National park in Tanzania boast very rare tree-climbing lions, but this is vary unusual behaviour for the lions in the Mara. It is said that the lions often spend the hottest parts of the day in the trees, apparently to avoid the tsetse flies. A unique experience for both our guides and guests!

ANDREW HARPER AWARD WINNERS
Andrew Harper circles the globe in search of those qualities that separate the truly enchanting from the merely excellent. We are therefore thrilled to announce that Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma and Sanctuary Zambezi Kulefu Camp were both featured in the January 2010 issue of Andrew Harper's Grand Awards. Andrew Harper also listed Sanctuary Zambezi Kulefu Camp under his list of "Indelible Memories of 2009"
What better guide to the African bush than a fully-grown African elephant?
The trio of orphaned elephants are back from their annual leave! Guests staying at either Sanctuary Baines' Camp or Sanctuary Stanley's Camp have the opportunity to take part in this very special learning adventure, accompanying the herd on their daily foraging treks (additional cost). The elephant interaction activity is very popular and in order to avoid disappointment we recommend pre-booking.

new habituated gorilla group launched in Uganda
A newly habituated gorilla family with 30 members was launched for tourism at the end of September. The new family, christened the Nshongi group, is located in Rushagain the southwestern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This will be the biggest group opened for tourism in the country and is expected to boost Uganda’s gorilla tourism capacity. The launch was a big event with some world class celebrities attending the occasion along with other key Uganda government officials. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp management was also at the launch.

wild dogs and white rhinos spotted at sanctuary chief's camp
Guests recently visiting Sanctuary Chief’s Camp were astonished to see eight adult wild dogs along with five pups near Palm Island. On the same day they also spotted the two resident white rhinos, Serondela and Sergeant, fighting for dominance. Not long after the fight started Sergeant wondered off alone with dented pride while Serondela proudly reclaimed his dominance. The southern white rhino is one of conservation's greatest success stories, as they were thought to be extinct in the late 19th century. In 1895 a small population of less than 100 was discovered in South Africa and after more than a century of protection and management, southern white rhinos are now the only non-endangered rhinos, being classified as Near Threatened.

if you can't go to the gorillas, the gorillas will come to you...
Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, tucked away in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, was recently host to some unexpected visitors. One of our guests at camp fell sick and had to forsake his long awaited dream of gorilla tracking. Fortunately, the gorillas decided to visit the camp while the guest was recovering and he was privileged to view the gorillas for much longer and with a much clearer view than those who went tracking. This once in a lifetime experience highlights why Sanctuary Retreats place such importance in having the right locations for our safari camps and lodges in Africa.
